Composite Filling &
Inlay / Onlay
Composite fillings are a type of direct filling used to repair cavities, tooth defects, or dental damage. They are also known as tooth-colored or plastic fillings, as they provide an aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional amalgam fillings.
Components of Composite Fillings
Composite fillings are made up of a mixture of plastic and tiny ceramic particles that are blended together. The mixture is then applied to the affected tooth and cured with a special lamp. This procedure usually only requires one session at the dentist’s office, and the filling is immediately durable after treatment.
Advantages of Composite Fillings
Composite fillings have the advantage of resembling the natural tooth color, making them less visible than amalgam fillings. They can also be made in different shades to achieve the most natural appearance possible. Additionally, the consistency of the composite allows for precise adaptation to the tooth’s shape and contour, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing outcome.
Although composite fillings are an aesthetically pleasing option, they have a shorter lifespan compared to amalgam fillings and can wear or break more quickly when subjected to strong chewing, hard foods, or teeth grinding. In some cases, it may also be necessary to apply several layers of composite material to fully repair the tooth.
